Psalm 103:20-22

Psalm 103:20-22

In 2022, our Texan buddy Caroline Cobb (check her out on Spotify) put us in touch with the folks from Listen To Verses, or Verses for short. Verses is an organization that oversees the setting of verbatim ESV scripture to music, usually a few verses at a time. Many artists have contributed to their work, including Caroline Cobb herself, Page CXVI and Zach Winters. They’re all pretty cool artists if you’ve never heard of them.

When I was looking over potential verses to set music to, I was drawn to Psalm 103:20-22. These three verses conclude the psalm in such an epic way. The repetition of “bless the LORD..” is a strong command that can lift me out of my temporal circumstances and causes me to enter joy, even, and maybe especially in sorrow. Joy and sorrow, I find, seem almost inseparable. The text is simple, yet deeply compelling.

Bless the LORD
O you his angels
You mighty ones
Who do his word
Obeying the voice of his word

Bless the LORD
All his hosts
His ministers
Who do his will

Bless the LORD
All his works
In all places of his dominion
Bless the LORD
O my soul

Tim Hepburn came over to the studio and tracked a few takes of drums. We love how it turned out.
